The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that SNAP benefits will no longer be available starting on Nov. 1. For the first time, Americans are facing losing food benefits, known as SNAP, due to a shutdown. Around 1-in-8 Americans depend on the program to help pay for groceries. Gina Plata-Nino, the interim director of the Food Research and Action Center, a non-profit that looks at SNAP, says there is a contingency fund that could be used to help cover the costs of the program.
