Residents in and around Takotna, Alaska were surprised on the evening of January 29, 2025 by significant shaking from a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. The Alaska Earthquake Center was in the midst of giving a tour to a group of international Arctic Weather Workshop attendees when suddenly, the ground started to shake.

Largest earthquake in 35 years hits Southwest Alaska
Jan 30, 2025 · ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Takotna Wednesday evening. It was the largest quake to hit the area since a magnitude 5.4 quake struck just south of McGrath in December 1989. Wednesday’s quake was nine miles southwest of Takotna, and just under six miles deep.
