The jockey of the Kentucky Derby-winning horse Sovereignty has been fined $62,000 for using his riding crop too many times.

Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory at the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, has been fined and suspended for the overuse of his whip during the race.

Alvarado whipped the bay colt eight times during the race, above the maximum six allowed by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.
