A small city on the Meghalaya-Assam border, nearly 2,000 kilometres away from Delhi, is the most polluted in the world, according to a report published by a global pollution watchdog.

Byrnihat, declared the world's most polluted city, faces severe health issues due to industrial pollution. Residents report respiratory diseases, contaminated water, and factory violations, prompting protests and calls for stricter regulations from local authorities.

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya has virtually denied contribution to air pollution in Byrnihat, an industrial town located along its border with Assam. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma suggested that it is Assam and not Meghalaya that is responsible for the very poor air quality index (AQI) in Byrnihat.

Unregulated industrial standards and vehicle emissions are the major drivers of the city's pollution. Joint action by the governments and citizens may help in combating the crisis.
