TOKYO -- A massive crash in snowy weather killed one person and injured 26 on an expressway in Japan late on Friday as the country kicked off its end-of-the-year holiday season.

A massive pile-up involving more than 50 vehicles took place on Japan’s Kan-Etsu Expressway amid heavy snowfall, killing a 77-year-old woman and injuring 26 others.

A 77-year-old woman from Tokyo died, police said. Out of the 26 injured, five were reported to be in serious condition.
