Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon will welcome Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to address redundancies and waste in the Department of Defense—a comment that comes as controversy surrounds Musk’s powerful agency and questions of what it can and cannot do in different departments.

Elon Musk’s incursion into the federal government is unprecedented. It’s also pretty good news for his companies.

Since taking office for his second term, President Donald Trump has issued a number of orders which included establishing the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE. This program, led by Musk, has caused a stir by going through government programs to validate funding.

Musk describes himself as “White House tech support,” and he has embedded himself in an unorthodox administration where there are no discernible limits on his influence.

Musk believes some $1 billion per week is being spent on fraudulent Treasury payments, prompting Trump to ask if this could help national debt.
