Barrow County schools will install weapons detection systems in all high schools following a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School, with implementation expected to begin next week at a cost of around $700,000.

Board of education members voted unanimously to install weapon detectors in high schools’ district wide. The vote happened at an emergency meeting Thursday night. The board called the meeting after Barrow County School System said a student brought a gun into Apalachee High School Wednesday.

An Apalachee High School student was arrested Wednesday afternoon for bringing a gun to school, according to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office. This comes just months after a deadly mass shooting was carried out at the same school in September.

Following the incident, Barrow County Schools announced that school was canceled at Apalachee High School on Thursday, Jan. 9. 11Alive obtained a copy of an email sent to parents that said students and staff should not report and that Open House is postponed. All on-campus extracurricular activities are also canceled.

That's where spending more on school counselors, school social workers and mental health workers could become a factor. Education advocates have long pushed Georgia to hire more counselors. The American School Counselor Association recommends one counselor for every 250 students, while the ratio in Georgia was 378 students per counselor last year.
